West Asheville Presbyterian Church

Missions and Outreach

November 18, 2019
The West Asheville Presbyterian Church project "Apple for a Teacher " was delivered today to Robin Mehler, a new fourth grade teacher at Vance Elementary School. She was over the moon with excitement along with her students as they opened the two large boxes of supplies and gift cards. Robin said she felt so special and to pass on her many thanks to the congregation of West Asheville Presbyterian Church for their generosity and love.  We will be visiting the classroom in early December with special gifts for her and the children. A local artist friend of Karen Hawkins hand made hair bows for the 10 girls in the class and a special Christmas  Gnome for the teacher. Karen and I had a wonderful time meeting the kids and we were asked to visit again soon. Thank to everyone in the community and church family that made this possible.

This is our world Vision child Erlin Gamaliel Lopez He was born on February 20, 2008.  He lives with his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. His father is a farm laborer.  Despite their efforts, it is difficult to meet the family needs.
Erlin is growing up in a poor community in the Latin American country of Guatemala.  Homes may be made if clay bricks with tin sheets or of bamboo cane with straw roofs, depending on what is available.  Families survive on corn, beans, eggs and milk or whatever homegrown food is available.  The climate in this region is moderate and the terrain is rocky and dusty.
Erlin is not in school at this time.  He likes to play soccer.  He is in satisfactory health
Our sponsorship commitment helps provide Erlin and his community with greater access to nutritious food, improved health care and hygiene.  Our support also provides educational opportunities for children.  Parents are given training to help them enhance their family's standard of living.  Finally, through Christian witness, these precious children and their families will have the joy of knowing God's grace and love.

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement of youth across the nation working together to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities around the time of the Super Bowl football game.
